D&E tennis teams lauded for academics
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Davis & Elkins men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned all-academic team accolades from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while seven Senator student-athletes were named scholar athletes for the 2018-19 season, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Ester Bolmenas (3.89 GPA; History), Karin Rosario (3.56 GPA; Hospitality Management), Taylour Newman (3.77 GPA; Hospitality Management), Alvaro Legoinha (4.0 GPA; Exercise Science), Cody Turner (4.0 GPA; Political Science/English), Mason Schoonover (3.91 GPA; Accounting) and Obert Matthew Mulyadi (3.83 GPA; Hospitality Management) all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades for the 2018-19 academic year.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 Scale). All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2018 and spring 2019).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present institution for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Head coach Jay Evans’ squads combined for seven victories last season, which included multiple victories over tennis programs in the Mountain East Conference, which Davis & Elkins will compete in during the upcoming season.
