Post 29 picks up key victory over Weston
ELKINS — Elkins took the Area 5 Division lead with a 3-1 victory over Weston in American Legion Baseball action Wednesday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Post 29, which improved to 16-13 overall and 5-1 in division play, now holds a one-game lead over Buckhannon (4-2). Post 4 fell to 2-2 in the division and is currently in third place after the loss. The No. 1 team in Area 5 at the end of the regular season gets to host the division tourney, and with two weeks remaining, each game is crucial from here on out.
“Tonight’s game was a very important one that we needed to win,” Elkins Manager Chris George said. “We didn’t swing the bats as well as we wanted, but getting the win was the most important thing and we achieved that. I give Weston credit, though, they came out and played us tough.”
Elkins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Read Schumacher walked and later scored on a Gage Bibey groundout.
After Weston tied the contest in the game in the fourth inning on a Chase Freeman RBI single, Post 29 crossed two more runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 3-1. Remington Stanley, who led Elkins at the plate in the contest with two hits, drove in the third and final run with an RBI single.
Brett Smith and Matthew Gainer both collected doubles in the game for Post 29.
Gainer earned the win for Elkins in six innings pitched. He allowed just three hits, struck out eight and walked four. Bibey pitched a hitless seventh for his fourth save of the season.
“Matthew pitched really well despite not having his best stuff tonight,” George said. “He went out there gave us all he had and helped lead us to the win.”
Tim Hunt gave up two runs on two hits and was saddled with the loss for Post 4.
He walked eight batters and struck out just one.
Elkins will play its third consecutive game at home when it entertains Morgantown for a 7 p.m. contest this evening.
