Post 91 blanks Elkins
Whitacre’s two-hitter lifts Romney to win
KEYSER — Brady Whitacre pitched five strong innings and Romney took advantage of several Elkins fielding miscues in posting a 10-0 victory over Post 29 Friday in America Legion baseball action at Potomac State College.
Post 91 capitalized on six Elkins errors through the first two innings and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Romney added a run in the third inning before capping off the scoring with three runs in the fourth.
Whitacre allowed just two Post 29 hits in the contest — a double from Dustyn Primavero and a single from Read Schumacher.
Whitacre helped his own cause at the plate by driving in two runs on one hit. Eli Hott chipped in with two hits and one RBI.
Will Knight took the loss for Post 29 (20-15) in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits, while striking out one and walking three.
“I should have had them better prepared to go over there (Keyser) and play,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “When you give up six runs and have six errors in the first two innings, you’re not going to have a very good chance of winning the game, especially against a good team like Romney.”
Elkins will entertain Summersville for a 5 p.m. contest today, before hosting Moorefield for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday to end the regular season.
The Area 5 tourney will begin Wednesday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Second-seed Buckhannon will face No. 3 seed Weston at 5 p.m., followed by top-seed Elkins vs. No. 4 Summersville in the nightcap.
