ELKINS — Charleston Catholic used three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 win over Elkins Friday in the season opener for both squads at EHS field.

The Lady Tigers (1-0) jumped out to the early lead in the contest when Sofia Triplett scored a breakaway goal eight minutes into the match.

The Lady Irish’s Shanna Carr knotted things up with a score five minutes later and Elizabeth Rushworth’s goal gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half.

Catholic capped off the scoring midway through the second half on a Bella Cinco goal.

“I thought we started the game well and played a good game throughout,” said Elkins coach Scott Cutright. “We definitely played better than we did in the pre-season game we had, and I think playing with a team the caliber of Charleston Catholic, which will likely play for a state title this season, will give us some confidence.”

Lady Tiger senior Isabella Karlen (27) and Charleston Catholic’s Grace Litton (12) move in on a loose ball during Friday’s match at EHS field. The Lady Irish claimed a 3-1 win in the season opener for both squads. Elkins will remain home on Monday to face South Harrison.

The Lady Irish held a 10-3 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

“I think we can take a lot of positives out this first game,” Cutright added. “We have another big game on Monday that we need to come out and try to get a win in.”

Elkins will return to action on Monday when it entertains sectional foe South Harrison for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
