Tiger golfers place third

Elkins will host tri-match today at Elks Course

GRAFTON – The Elkins High School golfers placed third during a Big 10 Conference quad-match Tuesday at Tygart Lake Golf Course.

Host Grafton posted a team total 181 to capture the match.

Preston finished with a 177, followed by Elkins with a 240.

Robert C. Byrd also competed but didn’t field a full squad.

Junior Ivan Looney-Sanders carded a 54 to lead the Tigers.

He was followed by freshman Tanner Miller (58), senior Gabby Bedford (63), junior Harman Young (65) and sophomore Chase Bedford (68).

Grafton’s Chris Miller fired a 1-under 36 to take medalist honors.

Elkins will open its home schedule at approximately 4:15 p.m. today for a tri-match.

Big 10 opponents Buckhannon-Upshur and East Fairmont will also compete.

“Hopefully (today) we can come out and score better on our own course,” Tigers coach Dave Baird said. “We have been hitting the ball well, but we just need to figure out how to score better.”
