Murphy accounts for 4 TDs to spoil homecoming for EHS
ELKINS — Gunner Murphy accounted for four touchdowns to lead North Marion to a 41-0 Big 10 Conference win over Elkins on homecoming Friday night at Wimer Stadium.
The Huskies, who also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the contest, built a 21-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Murphy got the scoring started with 6:40 remaining in the first quarter when he completed a 58-yard touchdown pass to Tariq Miller.
Murphy then gave North Marion (3-1) a 14-0 advantage when he scampered in for a 22-yard touchdown with 9:43 remaining in the second quarter.
The score was set up by muffed punt on the return at midfield.
On the final play of the first half, Murphy connected with Miller again, this time on a 46-yard scoring strike to give the Huskies a 21-0 advantage at intermission.
Murphy capped off the scoring for the North Marion offense with 8:28 left in the third quarter when he sprinted in for a 2-yard touchdown, making it 28-0.
A 24-yard return on a fumble recovery by Tyler Thorne later in the quarter pushed the deficit to 35-0, and Tyler Curry ended the scoring in the contest when he intercepted an Elkins pass and raced to paydirt from 52 yards out.
Murphy finished with 170 yards passing in the contest as the Huskies outgained the Tigers on the night, 299-134.
T.J. Guire led Elkins’ offense with 50 yards rushing, while also pacing the defense with 10 tackles.
The Tigers (0-4) will travel to Barbour County next Friday to battle rival Philip Barbour at 7 p.m. North Marion visits Lincoln the same evening.
