Lady Tigers place second at Bearcat invite; EHS boys 10th

GRAFTON  — The Elkins High School girls cross country team placed second and the boys 10th at the Bearcat Invitational on Saturday.

Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Addie Berdine, who placed sixth with a showing of 22:07, while teammate Kiley Edwards was ninth (22:33), Samantha Sproul 26th (23:58), Kaleigh Edwards 35th (24:58), Natalie Sutton 37th (25:14) and Holly Harper 82nd (31:03).

Fairmont Senior took the team title with 81 points, followed by Elkins (94), Philip Barbour (107), Doddridge County (114), Grafton (147), Frankfort (149), Tyler Consolidated (171), Oak Glen (189), North Marion (215), Keyser (223), Buckhannon-Upshur (239), Lewis County (274) and Robert C. Byrd (285).

“Our girls ran great today,” EHS coach Matt Lewis said.

“We still have a few girls nursing some non-serious injuries. Otherwise I think hands down we would have taken Fairmont Senior down today.”

Fairmont Senior’s Carlina Jacquez took the individual title in a time of 21:20.

Freshman Cadence Vincent placed second in a time of 21:41 to lead the Lady Bucs, while Philip Barbour’s top finisher was also a freshman as Megan Mitchell finished 12th (22:39)

Luke Anger placed 14th in a time of 18:16 to pace the EHS boys.

Charlie Smoak followed in 34th (19:36), Henry Fry 63rd (21:00), Tyler McKisic 77th (21:44), Austin Whetsell 86th (22:13), Antony Dong 92nd (22:23), Brandon Rossi 104th (23:05), Tyler Chewning 110th (23:31), Hunter Shreve 119th (23:52), Jasper Clark 135th (26:01) and Ben Auvil 149th (29:18).

Fairmont Senior tallied 40 points to take team honors, followed by Frankfort (87), Doddridge County (88), B-U (159), Philip Barbour (183), Grafton (186), Tyler Consolidated (203), Lewis County (226), Oak Glen (231), Elkins (247), Keyser (271), Berkeley Springs (274), Clay-Battelle (344), North Marion (350), Notre Dame (371) and Weir (424).

Hundred, Liberty, Lincoln, Paw Paw, South Harrison and Trinity Christian fielded incomplete teams.

“All I can say is we didn’t perform to our capabilities today,” Lewis said. “I don’t know where our focus was during the race, but it wasn’t on racing.”

Fairmont Senior’s Ethan Kincell turned in a time of 16:23 to win the individual title.

Senior Noah Ward crossed the line in seventh place (17:37) to lead Philip Barbour.

B-U was paced by Samuel Walker, who tallied an 18th-place finish in a time of 18:35.

Elkins will compete in the Buccaneer Invitational Tuesday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. The girls will race at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 5:15 p.m.
