Tigers drop 24-7 tilt to Minutemen
WESTON — Lewis County erupted for 24 unanswered points to pull past Elkins for a 24-7 win Friday night in Big 10 Conference action at Minutemen Field.
The Tigers (0-3) jumped out to the early 7-0 lead in the contest when Demanuel Smith scored a 5-yard touchdown off a reverse play with 3:18 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Minutemen, who improved to 2-1 with the win, tied the game with 9:08 left in the first half when Marshall Hobbs plunged in for a 1-yard touchdown.
Lewis County added a score just before the half when kicker Jared Griffith kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, giving the hosts a 10-7 lead at intermission.
The Minutemen pushed the deficit to 17-7 with 8:40 left to play in the third quarter when Hobbs scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard scamper.
With 4:53 left in the contest, Lewis County pushed the lead to 24-7 and iced the win with a 9-yard touchdown run from Chase Beam.
T.J. Guire led Elkins with 53 yards rushing. Quarterback Rodney Vandevender completed 7 of 16 passes for 83 yards.
Both teams were bit by the turnover bug in the contest as the Tigers had five miscues in the game. The Minutemen gave the ball up four times.
Elkins will entertain North Marion next Friday for homecoming at Wimer Field.
Lewis County will be idle next week before traveling to Preston on Sept. 27.
