Will travel to Fairmont St. in MEC semis

BUCKHANNON — Playing with snow on the turf of Cebe Ross Field, West Virginia Wesleyan notched a 2-0 win over the University of Charleston Tuesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference women’s soccer tourney play.

The Lady Bobcats (13-6-0) will now travel to Fairmont State at 7 p.m. Friday in semifinal play.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Shannon Shawgo’s shot was blocked by the UC keeper but Taylor Maucere was able to put home the loose ball.

The score remained 1-0 until Wesleyan added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Kayla Fay converted off a pass from Haelly Ramirez inside the Golden Eagle goal area.

It was the seventh straight shutout for the Lady Bobcats, who held a 5-3 advantage on shots on goal.

UC held a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.

Chelsea Hubner had three saves in goal for the winners.

In today’s other opening round game, Notre Dame College will host Urbana at 11 a.m.

The winner will face Concord at 1 p.m. Friday in Beckley.

The MEC title game is set for Sunday with the site and time to be determined.

The Wesleyan men will begin MEC tourney play today as they will visit Notre Dame College for a 1 p.m, contest at Mueller Field.
