Mountaineers travel to Pitt tonight

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia seeks a third straight victory over Pitt as the hardwood version of the Backyard Brawl takes place tonight at the Petersen Events Center.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. and the action will be televised on ESPNU.

The Mountaineers have just one game under their belt this season — a 94-84 home win over Akron last Friday night at the Coliseum

Senior guard Jermaine Haley and sophomore forward Derek Culver each bucketed 16 points in the victory, while Emmitt Matthews Jr. chipped in 13 points and freshman Miles McBride netted 11 points and dished out four assists in his debut.

Heralded freshman Oscar Tshiebwe was plagued by early foul trouble and finished with five points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.

The Panthers, meanwhile, are 2-1 on the campaign, including a 75-70 loss at home to Nicholls State.

Pitt bounced back from that setback on Tuesday night by taking a 71-57 verdict at Robert Morris. The Panthers’ other win this season came against Florida State.

Sophomore guard Ryan Murphy averages 17 points per game for second-year head coach Jeff Capel, while sophomore guard Trey McGowens is hitting for 15 ppg.

West Virginia won last year’s meeting, 69-59, in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers captured a 69-60 decision when the squads last met in the Petersen Events Center on Dec. 9, 2017.
