Tigers cruise past Bucs
Wyche, Guire help Elkins to 46-20 victory
ELKINS — Powered by strong ground games from T.J. Guire and Dennard “Dee” Wyche, Elkins racked up 368 yards rushing en route to a 46-20 victory over rival Buckhannon-Upshur Friday night in the season finale for both squads at Wimer Stadium.
Wyche ran for 136 yards in the contest, while Guire rushed for 133 as the Tigers, who ended the campaign with a 3-7 overall mark, stormed out to a 33-7 halftime advantage.
Guire got the scoring started for Elkins and gave the hosts a 6-0 lead when he capped off a 7-play, 80-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run on the Tigers’ first offensive possession on the game.
The Buccaneers (1-9) answered with their only points of the game until the final 2 minutes of regulation when Ryan Strader completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Kuhn with 2:33 left in the opening quarter.
Elkins came right back with an 8-play drive that Guire once again ended when he scored on a 6-yard run to make it 12-7 with 10:53 left until halftime.
The Tigers extended the lead to 19-7 when a bad snap on a punt attempt by B-U was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Elkins’ Peyton Isner with 8:04 left in the first half.
Wyche then scored his first touchdown of the game later in the second quarter when he broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run, making it 26-7 with 5:39 remaining in the opening half.
The Tigers ended the first-half barrage with 16 seconds left when quarterback Rodney Vandevender completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Wyche.
Vandevender, who finished with 52 yards rushing in the contest, added a pair of short touchdown runs in the third quarter to push Elkins’ lead to 46-7 and ice the win.
Strader completed another touchdown pass to Kuhn, a 28-yard score, with 2:20 left in regulation and added a 25-yard scoring strike to Sterlin Thropp with 16 seconds left to end the scoring in the game.
