Balanced Lady ’Toppers get past D&E, 86-78

ELKINS — Five players hitting for double figures and a second-quarter surge helped propel West Liberty to an 86-78 win over Davis & Elkins College Saturday in Mountain East Conference action at the McDonnell Center.

Taylor Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lady Hilltoppers (5-3, 2-2 MEC), who broke open a 21-21 deadlock after one quarter with a 28-14 scoring edge in the second period.

Corrine Thomas added 16 points for West Liberty, while Morgan Brunner and Jaclyn Kitts scored 13 points apiece. Olivia Belknap chipped in 12 points.

Jamiyah Johnson had another strong showing for the Lady Senators (1-7, 1-3) with 31 points and 15 rebounds.

D&E outscored the visitors in both the third and fourth periods but were unable to overcome the Lady Hilltoppers’ second-quarter output.

Peyton Mohler also reached double digits for the Lady Senators with 15 points. She added a game-high six assists.

D&E will remain home for another conference contest against Notre Dame (Ohio) on Thursday.

Wheeling 67, Wesleyan 58

BUCKHANNON — A late run in the second half helped the Wheeling University women’s basketball team earn a 67-58 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday in MEC play at Rockefeller Center.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Lady Bobcats dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3.

The contest was tied at 52-52 before Wheeling outscored Wesleyan, 15-6, over the final five minutes to pull away for the victory.

Lilly Ritz led the Lady Cardinals with 17 points and eight rebounds. Maura Castelluci scored 13 points and Lauren Lipscomb added 10 points.

The Lady Bobcats, who will remain home at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to face Urbana, were led by a 24-point effort by Nicole Gilyard.

Findlay 58, AB 44

PHILIPPI – Paige Bellman scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the University of Findlay over Alderson Broaddus, 58-44, Saturday in G-MAC play.

Lauren Ruth and Sydney Kin added 11 each for the Lady Oilers (5-4, 2-0 G-MAC),

Jeana Weatherspoon led the Lady Battlers (2-5, 1-1) with 12 points off the bench.

AB will host Salem at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
