Lady Battlers drop thriller at Shepherd, 62-61

SHEPHERDSTOWN — Marley McLaughlin’s jumper with two seconds remaining in regulation lifted Shepherd to a thrilling 62-61 victory over Alderson Broaddus on Monday night.

The Lady Battlers (1-4) held a 61-59 lead until McLaughlin sank the first of two free throws to cut the deficit to one.

The Lady Rams were able to get the offensive rebound of the second miss, leading to McLaughlin’s game-winning shot.

AB trailed by six, at 32-26, at the intermission before going on a 9-5 run to close the third quarter and take a 51-46 advantage into the final frame.

The Lady Battlers received most of their scoring production off the bench as Jeana Weatherspoon had 18 points and Shay Harper 13 in reserve roles.

Kristy Galea had a team-high three assists to go along with nine points for AB, while Hannah Henderson led in rebounds with six.

McLaughlin had 23 points and Sydney Clayton 14 to lead the Lady Rams (7-1).

Frankfort High School product Abby Beeman added team highs of six rebounds and six assists for the winners.

The Lady Battlers will return home at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday to face Hillsdale College in the G-MAC opener.
