ELKINS — Troy Battle scored a game-high 13 points as Class AAA, No. 5 preseason-ranked Morgantown defeated Elkins, 75-44, Tuesday night in the season opener for both squads at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Mohigans stormed out of the gates in the contest and held an 18-7 lead after one quarter.

Morgantown, which had 11 different players score in the game, went on to control a 42-19 lead at the halftime break.

“We didn’t respond very well to their pressure in the first half,” Elkins coach Amrit Rayfield said. “We turned the ball over too much and as a result, they (Morgantown) got a lot of easy points. We have to be able to take care of the ball better.”

Mac McMillen added 10 points for the Mohigans, while Xavier Pryor tossed in nine.

Brooks Gage, Alex Rudy and Carson Poffenberger chipped in eight points apiece.

Elkins, which was only outscored 33-30 in the second half, received 10 points each from Peyton Isner and Mason Kimbleton. DeAndre Owens followed with eight points.

The Tigers were outpointed 11-8 in the third quarter and both teams bucketed 22 markers in the final frame of the evening.

“I definitely saw some positives in the second half,” Rayfield said. “The kids never quit and they continued to battle throughout. I was proud of their effort.”

The Tigers will face another stern test on Friday when they travel to Parkersburg South for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Morgantown will face Notre Dame the same night in the Country Roads Tournament at University High School.
