Wamsley, who is in his 30th season an the school’s head basketball coach, has amassed 362 career victories. Wamsley took over the reins in 1991 after serving as an assistant coach in 1990. He was a graduate assistant at the school in 1972 and held that same title at Davis & Elkins College in 1976.

He was hired as an assistant coach at TVHS in 1977 and spent one more year there before taking the head coaching job at Elkins Middle School in 1979 and 1980. His first varsity head coaching job at the varsity level was in 1981 when he was named head at Doddridge County High School. He spent eight seasons there before taking the job at his alma mater (1972) in Mill Creek.

Wamsley’s Bulldogs have made the state high school tournament twice under his direction, including the final four in 1999. Tygarts Valley’s other appearance with the coach was in 1991.

The late Bill Weber, shown with his wife, Jackie, amassed 530 wins in 38 years of coaching high school basketball. He guided Tygarts Valley from 1926-29 and again from 1946-63, spending 16 years at Coalton in between.

Weber, meanwhile, graduated from Elkins High School in 1922 and then went on to earn a degree from Davis & Elkins College in 1926. His first coaching stint at Tygarts Valley High School was in 1926, at Coalton High School from 1930-45.

Weber returned to Tygarts Valley in 1946 and spent the next 18 years as the school’s boys basketball coach.

In all, Weber amassed 530 wins in 38 years as a high school head basketball coach.

He led the Bulldogs to the state tournament final four in 1952.

Weber is a member of the Davis & Elkins Athletic Hall of Fame (1984) and the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame (1991).

“Coach (Tom) Wamsley was very humble about the gym being named after him, and insisted that coach (Bill) Weber be included in the honor,” said Tygarts Valley High School principal Steve Wamsley.

“Coach Wamsley is not only an excellent coach but an incredible role model for his students and players.

“Coach Weber was a fixture at Tygarts Valley for many years and coached early in our school’s beginning. He was there when our gym was built in 1950.”

Tygarts Valley High School gymnasium has had many facelifts during its 70 years of existence, including six years ago when TVHS alum Don Judy donated money for the most recent makeover of the floor getting sealed and painted.

Fans, friends, and alumni are encouraged to come out and join in on the celebration of the accomplishments of both coaches on Jan. 31.
