Johnson notches 12th straight feat as D&E handles Fairmont St.
ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College women’s basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and dominating night on the boards en route to their second straight win of the week, a 64-48 victory over Fairmont State University Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the McDonnell Center.
The Lady Senators (4-13, 3-8 MEC), who snapped a five-game skid with a victory at home over Alderson Broaddus on Monday, had 11 different players score in the contest, including three in double figures as Jamiyah Johnson, Jay Kilpatrick and Peyton Mohler tossed in 11 points apiece.
Davis & Elkins, which led 29-24 at the half and 45-38 after three quarters of play, outrebounded the Lady Falcons, 58-20, in the contest, while also limiting the visitors to just 3 of 22 (13%) from behind the 3-point arc.
Johnson led the way on the glass for the Lady Senators with a game-high 15 caroms. It was the 12th straight double-double for the junior forward.
Sydney Nestor just missed having a double-double performance herself, as she had 11 boards to go with eight points and a team-high four assists.
D&E dashed any hopes Fairmont State had of making a comeback in the final quarter by starting the period on a 10-0 run. An old-fashioned three-point play from Mohler with 4:15 remaining made it 55-38 and capped off the surge.
Brooke Kurucz led the Lady Falcons in the contest with 14 points. Rachel Laskody followed with 12 points and Sierra Kotchman scored 11.
Fairmont State (9-8, 6-5) will travel to Cumberland (Md.) to face Frostburg State for is next contest on Sunday.
The Lady Senators, meanwhile, will entertain MEC rival West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Saturday.
