EMS varsity, JV girls defeat Philippi Middle

PHILIPPI – The Elkins Middle School varsity girls squad claimed a 26-16 win over Philippi on Thursday night.

Addy Cogar had nine points and Emerson Haddix six for the Lady Hornets, who are now 8-2 on the season.

“It was a good team win,” EMS coach Clint Bennett said. “I wasn’t happy with our overall defense and mental focus tonight.

“We were sluggish, but the girls toughed it out and made plays when we needed them. We will continue to build off this.”

Makayla Gonzales tallied five points for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Hornets also won the junior varsity tilt, 24-4, to improve their record to 6-2.

Maura O’Neill bucketed six points and Emma Gilbert and Jasmin Workman chipped in three each for Elkins in the win.

Sydney Ayars and Ashley Poling had two apiece for the hosts.

Elkins will be return in action Tuesday at Tucker Valley. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity contest.

Philippi is slated to visit Trinity Christian today.
