In its 10th year of existence, WVHIT still going strong

MILL CREEK – The West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament is still going strong in its 10th season of existence.

The WVHIT provides smaller public single-A schools in the state an opportunity to play in a tournament-like atmosphere.

While the girls — in their eighth season of participating — began WVHIT action last weekend, the boys will take to the court tonight.

The tournament is broken down into Division I and Division II, and contests will be held over the next several weeks, leading up to the championship weekends in February.

Boys teams competing in Division I include Clay-Battelle, Greenbrier West, St. Marys, Ritchie County, Tygarts Valley, Tolsia, South Harrison, Buffalo, East Hardy and Van.

Clay-Battelle and Greenbrier West are the top seeds in D-I and are ranked seventh and sixth, respectively, in this week’s AP poll.

Division II entries are top-seed Hundred, Harman, Paw Paw, Montcalm, Meadow Bridge, Union and Paden City.

“We’re certainly still around and haven’t went away,” said WVHIT president and Tygarts Valley boys coach Tom Wamsley.

As part of the WVHIT schedule, Wamsley’s Bulldogs will host Ritchie County at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.

Coach Wamsley, in his 30th season at Tygarts Valley, will also be honored during the evening with the hardwood at the school gym being branded Weber-Wamsley Court.

Bill Weber coached the TV boys from 1926-29 and again from 1946-63.

He passed away in 2004 at the age of 99.
