Local mountain bike team wins second state title

For the second year in a row, the Highlands Composite Team has won the Overall State Team Championship. Points are accrued during the races for each team and at the end of the season. The team with the most points wins the overall state team champion title.

Highlands won the team title at all five races, thus making them the 2019 State Team Champion. Each athlete also gets points during their races and the leader of the grade division will be appointed a leader’s jersey. The End of Season Division Points Leaders for the team were: JV Girl’s Division, Isabelle Judy; Sophomore Girl’s Division, Natalie Sutton; Freshman Boy’s Division, Ashton White; Freshman Girl’s Division, Alyssa White; and Sixth Grade Girl’s Division, Zanna Logar.

The Highlands Composite Mountain Bike Team competes in the West Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League, which is a part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. This is the second year for the state-wide league, and this year there were 13 teams competing from across the state.

The league held five races during the fall season as a club sport for middle school and high school athletes. All of the races are held at parks to help promote tourism around the state. The venues for the races this year were: Big Bear Lake, North Bend State Park, Canaan Valley State Park, Little Creek City Park and Stonewall Jackson Park.
