Tigers get road victory over Polar Bears

FAIRMONT – Blake Harris canned six 3-pointers on his way to 20 points as Elkins picked up a 60-54 win over Fairmont Senior Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

Harris also dished out four assists for the Tigers, who overcame a 45-41 deficit after three quarters by outscoring the Polar Bears, 19-9, in the decisive fourth quarter.

“We did a great job in the fourth quarter,” Elkins coach Amrit Rayfield said. “We hit a couple of key baskets and free throws, along with making some key defensive stops.”

Rayfield added his squad also did a good job defensively on Fairmont Senior’s top two scorers — Trey Washenitz and Jaelin Johnson — in the final frame.

“(Washenitz and Johnson) got their points on the night,” Rayfield said. “But in the fourth quarter, we held Johnson to just a free throw and they had to work for their points.

“It was great for us to go on the road and pick up our second straight conference victory.”

Both Washenitz and Johnson had 18 points on the night.

Each team scored 13 points in the first quarter and 17 in the second as the game headed into intermission deadlocked at 30-all.

Mitchell Price added 12 points for the the Tigers, who had 12 3-pointers on the night.

Elkins also picked up a 31-22 win in the junior varsity contest.
