Betler hits late basket in 56-54 victory over EH
HAMBLETON — Tucker County picked up a second win on the season Tuesday night after collecting a 56-54 win over Potomac Valley Conference rival East Hardy on the mountain.
The Cougars’ Seth Smith sank a trey to tie the contest up at 54-54 with 31.6 seconds left in regulation. Gus Mullennex then found Wyatt Betler for an assist after Betler banked in the winning shot with 2.5 seconds to go in the game.
Betler finished with a game-high 19 points, scoring 15 points over the final two quarters.
The contest featured five lead changes in the first quarter as the Mountain Lions went ahead, 14-13, via a late 3-pointer by Trey Key to put TCHS up for good as the black and gold never trailed after those points were put on the scoreboard.
After a 21-16 second stanza edge, the hosts went ahead, 35-29, by the intermission break.
East Hardy scored the first two points of the third period before Tucker County used a 12-0 run to be up 47-31 midway through the frame. The visiting Cougars then broke out with an 11-point run of their own to trail 47-42 to start the final quarter of play.
Zach Long added 10 points for the Mountain Lions and Key rounded up eight points total on the night.
Pacing East Hardy was Christian Dove with 16 points. Smith added 13, while Justin Teets bucketed 10.
Tucker County (2-7, 2-2 PVC) is scheduled to be at Lincoln on Monday.
East Hardy (3-6, 0-3) is set to host Pendleton County on Friday from Baker.
