ELKINS — Ryan Hurst scored 16 points and Buckhannon-Upshur connected on key free throws down the stretch en route to 60-54 victory over Elkins Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Buccaneers (10-8), who snapped a four-game losing streak with the win, took a 47-46 lead into the final quarter and extended the advantage early in the set as a Noam Keith jumper with 5:50 remaining made it 52-48.

The Tigers’ Dre Owens answered on the other end to make it a two-point game with five minutes to play.

But Buckhannon-Upshur pushed the lead back out to five, at 55-50, after one free throw from Josh Loudin and a pair from Ryan Strader with 4:33 left.

Elkins (6-10) was able to get the visitors’ lead back two points again after a long jumper from Zach Miller made it 56-54 with under two minutes to go.

But Buckhannon-Upshur, which sank 9 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter, connected on 4 of 6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of regulation to ice the win.

“It was a great rivalry game that everyone expects when these two teams play,” said Elkins coach Amrit Rayfield. “Unfortunately, Elkins fans went home sad and their (B-U) fans went home happy. They (B-U) made the plays in the fourth quarter and the free throws down the stretch.”

Loudin followed Hurst in the scoring column for the Buccaneers with 14 points. Keith chipped in with seven.

Owens and Blake Harris paced the Tigers, who led 17-14 after one quarter and 34-32 at the half, with 15 points each.

“I was very, very proud of our effort tonight,” said Rayfield. “We competed and gave it all we had for 32 minutes. If we can play like that each night, we will be in good shape.”

The Tigers will remain home for a conference contest against Grafton on Friday. The Bucs will play host to Musselman on Monday.
