Lady Hornets drop verdict to RLB in JV play

FAIRMONT  — The Elkins Middle School varsity girls advanced to the title game of the East Fairmont tournament with a 34-25 victory over Robert L. Bland on Wednesday.

Emerson Haddix had 13 points, Laney Fletcher nine and Gracelin Corley eight for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 14-4.

Emma Pinkey led the Lady Patriots with 10 points.

“This was a good team win,” EMS coach Clint Bennett said. “We played well defensively and hit some shots. We had a few rushed offensive possessions that we will get cleaned up, but I’m proud of the girls. They played hard.”

The Lady Hornets lost a 30-15 decision to RLB in junior varsity action.

Mallory Bennett had four points and Bryleigh Shifflet added three for EMS (9-4).

The Lady Hornets will play in the varsity championship game at 7:45 p.m. Friday, while the EMS JV squad will face West Fairmont in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m.
