Lady Bucs pull away from Elkins

McDaniels tosses in 21 points to lead B-U to 68-56 win; Belan nets career-high 28 for Lady Tigers

TENNERTON – Shelby McDaniels drilled five 3-pointers en route to 21 points as Buckhannon-Upshur pulled away for a 68-56 win over Big 10 Conference rival Elkins on Tuesday night.

The contest much closer than the first meeting between the teams back in December when the Lady Bucs posted a 26-point victory at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The score was deadlocked at 15-15 after one quarter before B-U held scoring edges of 17-9 in the second frame and 20-11 in the third to open up a 52-35 edge.

The Lady Tigers, however, rebounded to take the final quarter, 21-16, to get within 12 at the final horn.

Senior Brooklyn Maxwell added 14 points for the Lady Bucs (13-7), while McKenzie Reynolds just missed double figures with nine.

Sophomore Anna Belan fired in a career-high 28 points and collected a pair of steals to lead Elkins (6-14). Madison Holland chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals, Lilly Bradberry grabbed five caroms and Autumn Lane two steals.

“We were much improved from when we played them to start the season,” Elkins coach Matt Davis said. “Anna Belan played extremely well, along with Maddie (Holland) and the seniors. I’m very proud of this team in how far they have came as a team.

“We wish the seniors of B-U all the luck in the sectionals as well.”

Elkins is slated to visit Class AA, No. 7 Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. Monday for a Big 10 Conference make-up game.

The Lady Bucs will remain home at 6:45 p.m. Friday to battle Class AAA, No. 1 Wheeling Park.
