RCB too much for Tigers

ELKINS — Blake Meighen knocked down six three-pointers and finished with 20 points as Class AA, No. 4 Robert C. Byrd garnered its 19th consecutive victory with a 69-39 triumph over Elkins Wednesday night in the Tigers’ regular-season finale at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Eagles, who improved 19-2 with the win, broke open a 16-10 lead after one quarter with a big second period. A pair of free throws from Brayden Thomason with two minutes remaining in the first half capped off a 16-3 run and gave the visitors a 32-13 edge.

Robert C. Byrd went on to take a 37-18 lead at intermission and extended the lead to 56-36 entering the final quarter.

“They (RCB) play well together and execute,” said Elkins coach Amrit Rayfield.

“We did some things right against them in the first quarter, but in the second we turned the ball over a couple of times and they got out and ran on us. It’s hard not to have sent our seniors out with a win on senior night, but we have an opportunity to come out on Saturday and get a victory for them.”

Bryson Lucas added 17 points for the Eagles, who will entertain Grafton in their regular-season finale Friday, and Gavin Kennedy tossed in 13.

Ekins (9-13), which will get one final home game when it opens sectional tournament play against Liberty at 2 p.m. Saturday, received seven points each from Dre Owens, Brayden Davis and Zach Miller.
