Coach Neil Brown announces additions of Legg and Casteel

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown announced the additions of Bill Legg and Jeff Casteel to the Mountaineer football staff on Friday.

Legg will be an assistant to the head coach, while Casteel will serve as a defensive analyst.

Both were previously members of the WVU football staff.

“Bill is a great addition to our football staff, not only with his years of successful football coaching experience but also being from the state of West Virginia,” Brown said. “He was the first signee of legendary Hall of Fame Coach Don Nehlen, so he has ties to the program. He is a WVU graduate, a former starter for the football program and coached for several years on the staff. We are excited to have Bill, his wife Kelly, and his daughter, Sarah, rejoin the Mountaineer Football Family.”

Legg returns to West Virginia after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Mercer for the past year, coaching four All-Southern Conference selections for the Bears.

“This is really an exciting time to be working with the WVU football program,” Legg said. “I have a lot of respect for what Coach Brown has already done with the program and the direction it is heading. My family and I look forward to being back home.”

Casteel brings 33 years of defensive coaching experience, including 27 years as a defensive coordinator. He has helped guide teams to 14 conference championships and 15 bowl appearances and has coached numerous All-Americans and professional players. He was named the rivals defensive coordinator of the year in 2007, Big East Defensive Coordinator of the Year in 2008, a Broyles Award nominee (five times) and the Football Scoop Linebacker Coach of the Year in 2014. During his tenure at WVU, the Mountaineers experienced one of their greatest periods of success, including winning three BCS bowl wins, 2006 Sugar Bowl, 2008 Fiesta Bowl and the 2012 Orange Bowl.

“I’m excited to welcome Jeff back to West Virginia and the Mountaineer football program,” Brown said.
