ELKINS — Davis & Elkins wrestling had seven individuals earn 2019-20 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Scholar All-American honors, as the organization released its academic awards on Monday.

A total of 267 student-athletes from 49 institutions were honored individually. Half of the national qualifiers to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships were among those honored, with 91 of the 267 wrestlers also being 2020 National Qualifiers. For the third year in a row, the Saints of Maryville University posted the top team GPA in the NWCA Division II Scholar All-America ranking for the 2019-20 year.

Craig Cook (3.8 GPA; criminal justice), Tyler Cutright (3.8; business), Shawn Moore (3.6; business), Clifton Ruggiero (3.4; business), Noah Tarr (3.6; business), Chad Tracy (3.5; criminal justice) and Kyle Wojtaszek (3.69; biology) were named to the prestigious 2019-20 NWCA Division II All-Academic Team.

I’m extremely proud of the accomplishments of Shawn, Craig, Tyler, Cliff, Noah, Chad and Kyle,” head coach Jerry Boland said. “Their hard work in the classroom and on the mat has paid off with this honor of Scholar All-American. Considering the current unfortunate circumstances in our country, it also gives us a much-needed achievement to celebrate. Congratulations to them and their families!”

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II Scholar All-American Team, he must have a minimum 3.4 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with that benchmark at 3.2 for those who qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. The athlete must also have competed in a minimum of five dates of competition.

Cook, Ruggiero, Tarr and Wojtaszek qualified for the 2020 NCAA DII Wrestling Championships in the program’s inaugural season.
