Area golfers qualify for state tourney

ELKINS — A pair of area golfers and one team earned spots in next week’s state tournament Monday in regional play.

Tygarts Valley’s Andrew Holbrook earned low-medalist honors in the Class A, Region 2 golf tourney held at Canaan Valley, while Elkins High School sophomore Tanner Miller shot an 85 in the Class AA, Region II event hosted by Clarksburg Country Club.

Both qualified as individuals.

Buckhannon-Upshur, meanwhile, placed second in the Class AAA, Region I tourney at Williams Country Club in Weirton to earn a spot in the team competition.

Team members for the Bucs include Landon Hitt, Isaac Lane, Evan Coffman and Tucker Hurst.

Holbrook carded a 73 to win top honors by four strokes.

“I’m extremely proud of Andrew and his performance today,” said Bulldogs coach Jonathan Kyle. “This is what he has worked hard all year to achieve.

“He had a some great shots and was accurate off the tee. He hit 50% of his fairways in regulation and his putting really kept him in it.”

Moorefield captured the regional crown at Canaan Valley with a team-total 243. Notre Dame (268) finished second to also qualify for states.

South Harrison (292), Pendleton County (322), Petersburg (334) and Trinity Christian (343) rounded out the team scoring.

Fielding incomplete teams were Tygarts Valley, Tucker County, Union and Clay-Battelle.

Harper Russell (85) and Wyatt Betler (100) competed for the Mountain Lions.

South Harrison’s Ethan Titus was the other individual qualifier as he finished with an 84.

The state golf tourney will be held Oct. 6-7 at Spiedel Golf Club at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.
