Bucs rally past Colts, 19-10
TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur scored a pair of second-half touchdowns to rally for a 19-10 win over Philip Barbour Friday night at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
It was the first win of the season for the Bucs, who trailed 10-6 at halftime.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Colts struck first on Jesiah Matlick’s 1-yard quarterback keeper with 9:04 left until halftime to make it 7-0 with Hunter Melvin adding the conversion kick.
After Zach Mayle recovered a muffed fumble on a Colt punt return, B-U cut the deficit to 7-6 on Elijah Bryant’s 1-yard run with 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Philip Barbour added points before the break when a 40-yard pass from Matlick to Ethan Floyd led to Melvin’s 29-yard field goal to stake the Colts to a 10-6 halftime lead.
B-U took the lead for good in the third quarter when Jayden Owens found Sterlin Thropp on a 27-yard connection on a halfback pass to make it 13-10 after Cameron Zuliani’s conversion kick.
The Bucs added a 20-yard pass from Ian Donnen to Tyson Pugh with 11:40 left in regulation to set the final score at 19-10.
Bryant led the B-U ground game with 71 yards.
Donnen was 6 of 9 passing for 46 yards and two scores.
The Colts were limited to less than 20 yards of total offense in the second half.
Matlick had an interception in the second quarter, which led to his TD run, for PB.
Thropp had a fumble recovery and an interception on defense for the Bucs, who are slated to visit Hampshire on Friday.
The Colts will host Liberty on the same night.
