WHEELING — The state golf tournament begins this morning at the Jones Course at Oglebay’s Speidel Golf Club and Buckhannon-Upshur’s team will be allowed to take part in the action.

After some uneasy moments when Upshur County went red in Saturday’s WVDHHR protocol map, the Bucs were permitted to participate in the tournament after the county went orange on Monday.

Coach Jason Westfall indicated all four of his team members tested negative for COVID-19.

B-U’s foursome includes Landon Hitt, Tucker Hurst, Isaac Lane and Evan Coffman.

Meanwhile, Elkins’ Tanner Miller and Tygarts Valley’s Andrew Holbrook both qualified for states as individuals.

Miller, a sophomore, shot an 85 to finisher runner-up in last week’s Class AA, Region II tourney held in Clarksburg.

Holbrook returns to Wheeling after being the low medalist in the Class A, Region 2 tournament held at Canaan Valley.

The senior shot a 73.

Dave Baird and Jonathan Kyle serve as the coaches for Elkins and Tygarts Valley, respectively.

Pocahontas County will also compete as a team in Class A.

Team members for the Warriors include Ben Dunz, David Gibb, Michael Kane and Hadden Mick.

Webster County’s Sydney Baird, the daughter of Elkins native Ryan Baird, will also compete.

The state tournament will conclude on Wednesday.

Huntington (AAA), Fairmont Senior (AA) and St. Mary’s (A) are the defending champions.
