PHILIPPI — Top-seed Philip Barbour advanced to the Class AA-A, Region II, Section 1 finals with a 3-0 win over Grafton Thursday night at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

The Lady Colts (7-1-1) will host Liberty at noon Saturday in the title game. The Lady Mountaineers defeated Robert C. Byrd in PKs to advance.

Freshman Arrington Sparks scored both first-half goals as Philip Barbour took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Twin sister Braylyn Sparks added an insurance goal in the second half.

The Lady Bearcats finished with a 5-12-2 mark. They had defeated Lincoln, 2-0, in their sectional opener.

“We came out with great intensity and were able to get a 2-0 lead,” Lady Colts coach Blake Williams said. “Grafton did a great job of staying in the game and our defense played well in shutting down their attack.”

In Class AA-A, Region 2 boys play, Philip Barbour fell at Robert C. Byrd in PKs.

The Colts ended the season 5-3-0,

Both Philip Barbour squads just returned to the practice field earlier this week after not being allowed to practice due to COVID-19 protocol.

Neither team had seen game action in nearly a month.
