State playoffs continue tonight
ELKINS — Three Big 10 Conference teams will be in action tonight in quarterfinal action of the state football playoffs.
While sixth-rated Fairmont Senior (8-2) entertains No. 14 Independence (5-2) at historic East-West Stadium, Bridgeport and North Marion face stern road tests.
The fifth-rated Indians (7-1) visit No. 4 Martinsburg (5-1) in a Class AAA matchup and the No. 10 Huskies (6-3) are at No. 2 Bluefield (6-1).
Two other Class AAA quarterfinal games are set for this evening as No. 9 Spring Mills (5-2) visits top-rated Cabell Midland (5-0) and No. 10 Princeton (6-2) is at No. 2 South Charleston (5-0).
The remainder of playoff action will take place Saturday and Sunday.
A pair of Randolph County squads– Elkins and Tygarts Valley — will nervously await Saturday’s DHHR color-coded map to see if their seasons will continue. The county needs to be either green, yellow or gold for the teams to compete.
The 16th-rated Tigers, coming off their first-ever playoff win last Friday at No. 1 Sissonville, are scheduled to visit fellow Big 10 member Robert C. Byrd at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The teams met in the first game of the regular season, with the Eagles claiming a 35-12 win over the short-handed Tigers, who were missing several starters, including transfer Dante Ramirez and his 14 touchdowns scored on the season.
The 16th-rated Bulldogs, meanwhile, are set for a trip to No. 8 Pendleton County at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Class A action.
The teams were scheduled to meet during the regular season but that game was canceled due to COVID protocol.
