D&E, Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus all in action tonight

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins men’s and women’s basketball teams make their season debuts today, welcoming Frostburg State for Mountain East Conference play inside the McDonnell Center.

The start of the season was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no spectators will be allowed to attend.

Daniel Mondragon enters his second season as the D&E men’s coach. Senior guards Myles Monroe, Patrick Wilburn and Emre Yildirim are the top returnees for the Senators, who were selected to finish 11th in the MEC preseason poll released on Wednesday.

Monroe averaged 13.1 points to go along with 5.6 rebounds last season.

Forwards Teemu Tumanoff, Kyle Leslie, Ryan Wickham and former Elkins High School standout and guard Elliot White also return with experience.

The Lady Senators’ Jamiyah Johnson tied an NCAA record last season with 24 consecutive double-doubles.

In the women’s contest, Rachel Swartz makes her coaching debut for the Lady Senators, who return four starters to the fold, including senior Jamiyah Johnson.

The center averaged a double-double last year and tied an NCAA record with 24 consecutive games in double figures in scoring and rebounding.

Other returning starters include Tucker County High School product Sydney Nestor, Peyton Mohler and Jessica Eadsforth-Yates.

Nestor averaged 10.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds as a sophomore.

D&E was tabbed ninth in the MEC preseason poll.

Women’s action is set to begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s tilt at 7:30 p.m.

In other action, the West Virginia Wesleyan men will host Fairmont State at 7:30 p.m. and Alderson Broaddus travels to Wheeling in men’s and women’s action.

Wesleyan’s women’s game against Fairmont State was postponed due to the Lady Falcons pausing team activites due to COVID protocol.

The Fairmont State-D&E women’s game slated for Sunday has also been postponed.
