D&E men best Concord; Women give Swartz first win

ELKINS — Davis & Elkins defeated Concord, 67-56, Saturday afternoon in MEC play at the McDonnell Center.

Gyasi Powell led the Senators (2-2, 2-2 MEC) with 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting. He also had four steals and four assists. Breland Walton contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double, and Marcus Fleming had eight points and 11 rebounds. Sam Rolle IV dished out a game-high nine assists.

Malik Johnson had 16 points for Concord (2-2, 2-2 MEC).

The Senators led 36-24 at halftime before the Mountain Lions rallied to cut the deficit to single-digit deficit on a Johnson bucket with 5:16 left in regulation.

Two foul shots by Mohamed Bundu brought visitors to within six, but Monroe, Powell and Walton all cashed in on opportunities at the free throw line for the final 67-56 tally.

D&E returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Charleston at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s game

D&E 67, Concord 65

D&E gave first-year coach Rachel Swartz her initial win at the helm with a 67-65 MEC victory over Concord on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved the Lady Senators’ record to 1-2 on the year and 1-2 in the MEC, while the Lady Mountain Lions dropped to 2-2 and 2-2.

Jamiyah Johnson paced the Senators with 20 points and 16 rebounds for another double-double.

Jessica Eadsforth-Yates had eight points, six assists and five rebounds. The balanced team effort also saw Amiah Banks notch nine points, while Peyton Mohler and Sydney Nestor had six each.

Trailing 63-62 with 1:31 to go, Marissa Berlin’s layup gave the Lady Senators the lead for good with just over a minute to play

D&E will entertain Charleston at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
