Wesleyan, AB women advance in MEC tourney

West Virginia Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus are both headed to the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference women’s tourney.

The South Division fifth-seeded Lady Bobcats advanced with a 100-84 win over S4 West Virginia State in Monday’s first round, while the North Division No. 5 Lady Battlers got past N4 Fairmont State.

Abi Gabauer had 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting and Symphonie Bryant-Brown added 20 points in Wesleyan’s road win.

Brittany Stawovy had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Malaika Kimmons had 13 points and eight rebounds. Summer Matlack had 11 points, eight assists and four rebounds, and Courtney Wilfong chipped in 10.

Shay Harper hit a key 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds left in regulation in AB’s 85-79 win over the homestanding Lady Falcons.

The Lady Battlers (7-10) were led by Maddy Moyer with 26 points. Celeste Walters recorded a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Carissa Spiker chipped in 13 points.

AB trailed 77-76 before Harper’s trey put her team on top for good. The Lady Battlers went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to preserve the win.

Wesleyan (6-10) faces North Division champion Notre Dame (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena, while AB battles South Division winner Charleston at 5 p.m.
