Big first inning propels Indians by Colts
Tygarts Valley Middle School softball team downs EMS for first program win
PHILIPPI — Bridgeport plated six runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 12-1 win over Philip Barbour in five innings Tuesday in a Big 10 Conference matchup.
Ryan Goff drove in four runs on three hits and Nate Paulsen had three hits and three RBIs for the Indians.
Alfred Isch had a double and RBI for the Colts (4-3, 2-3 Big 10). Cody Cooper added a pair of hits.
Isch took the loss in 2/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on three hits.
Ben McDougal went the first four innings, giving up just one run on two hits and fanning six for the win.
Philip Barbour hosts Lincoln today.
RCB 14, B-U 4, 5 innings
CLARKSBURG — Robert C. Byrd broke open a close game with nine runs over the final two frames to defeat Buckhannon-Upshur, 14-4, in five innings Tuesday in Big 10 play.
The Bucs trailed 5-4 before the Eagles scored five runs in the fourth on the strength of two-run homers by Evan Warne and Grant Lowther and an RBI double by Tanner Cook. They added four runs an inning later to end the game.
Eli Bryant had an RBI sacrifice fly, Brady Hurst an RBI double and Zach Calef-Boring and Jay Burnside run-producing singles for B-U (5-4, 5-3 Big 10).
Xavier Lopez earned the win for RCB, allowing three runs on six hits in two innings of action.
The Bucs are slated to host Elkins today.
Middle school softball
Tygarts Valley 16, Elkins 8
MILL CREEK — First-year program Tygarts Valley Middle School collected its first softball victory with a 16-8 win over Elkins on Tuesday.
It was also the first home game for the Lady Bulldogs. They were led by Kailen Yokum, Emily Smith and Addison Riddle, who were all 4 for 5 in the contest.
Alyssa Swecker and Sarah Defibaugh were also 3 for 5.
Janie Blackwood pitched a complete-game on the mound, striking out five.
