Lady Tigers advance in sectionals
Lane, Corley combine for 36 points in victory over Lady Mountaineers
ELKINS — Sophomore Autumn Lane and freshman Gracelin Corley combined for 36 points to help lead Elkins to a 52-36 win over Liberty Monday night in Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 action at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.
The fourth-seeded Lady Tigers (2-12) will now visit top seed Lewis County at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Third-seed Lincoln travels to No. 2 Robert C. Byrd in the other sectional semifinal on Wednesday. The title game is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the highest remaining seed.
Elkins built a 15-7 lead after one quarter and started to pull away in the second quarter after Lane scored inside and added a 3-pointer to give the Lady Tigers a 25-10 cushion with 2:20 left until halftime.
The Lady Mountaineers ended the frame on a 7-4 surge to cut the deficit to 29-17 at the break, and then took the third frame, 9-6, to make it 35-26.
Elkins answered in the final quarter as Anna Belan netted seven of her eight points on the night in the canto, and the Lady Tigers connected on 7 of 10 free throws to pull away.
Lane had a game-high 19 points in the win, while Corley tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of steals. Belan also had three steals.
Emma Elliott paced Liberty, which ended the season 1-14, with 16 points.
