Simon pitches Lady Colts to win; EHS swept
PHILIPPI — Sara Simon fanned 11 and didn’t surrender a hit or run in five-plus innings of relief as Philip Barbour notched its first win of the season in a 7-5 victory over Grafton Tuesday in Big 10 Conference play.
The Lady Colts (1-1) trailed 5-2 before plating three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
Lilley Criss singled in Katie Kennedy to give PB the lead for good in the bottom of fourth, while Simon added an an insurance run with an RBI single.
Bella Bibey and Amanda Reed had run-producing doubles, and Hailee Poling an RBI sacrifice fly for the Lady Colts in the third.
Simon’s single and Reed’s sac fly accounted for PB’s runs in the first.
The Lady Bearcats took advantage of four errors by the hosts to plate five runs in top of the second to grab a 5-2 cushion.
Maggie Mincey, Criss, Simon and Preslee Fincham all had two hits for the Lady Colts.
Frederique Maloley took the loss for Grafton, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking two.
Liberty sweeps EHS
CLARKSBURG — The Elkins High School softball team dropped a 16-1 decision in four innings to Liberty in the first game of a Big 10 Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
Destiny Coble had a grand slam to highlight an eight-run first inning for the Lady Mountaineers in the lidlifter.
Savannah Weekley added three RBIs, Charlee Johnson three hits and two RBIs and Junee James two RBIs in the win.
Haley Younkins earned the win for Liberty, allowing one run on three hits and fanning four in going the distance.
Dacey Arbogast went 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Lady Tigers. Kylee Cable took the loss on the mound.
Liberty took the nightcap, 13-1.
Elkins (0-2) will host Lincoln at 6 p.m. Thursday.
