Tucker fends off Lady Tigers
ELKINS – A determined and scrappy Elkins team battled Class A, No. 2 Tucker County to the wire on Friday night before falling just short, 43-40, at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.
The Lady Tigers trailed 30-25 after three quarters in a closely played and physical contest before cutting the deficit to 41-40 on a basket by Autumn Lane with 48 seconds left in regulation.
After London Hood hit one of two free throws to give the Mountain Lions a two-point edge, Elkins turned the ball over on the other end and Hood later hit the back end of two free-throws with 10 ticks left to make it 43-40.
The Lady Tigers were unable to get the tying basket on their final possession as Tucker County gained control of the ball as time expired.
Elkins trailed 12-6 after one quarter but used a 3-pointer by Aaliyah Hogue with 4:55 left in the first half to get within two, at 16-14.
The Lady Mountain Lions carried a 21-18 advantage into the intermission and outscored the hosts 9-7 in the third to lead by five after three quarters.
Kadie Colebank, coming off a career-high 30 points the night before at East Hardy, had 20 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocked shots and three steals to lead the winners.
Jacey Davis also reached double figures, while junior point guard London Hood, who battled foul trouble the entire night, added four assists and just three points – 11 below her season average.
Freshman Gracelin Corley paced the Lady Tigers with 16 points. Anna Belan and Autumn Lane netted seven each and Hogue hit two 3-pointers in tallying six points.
Elkins (1-9) will visit Philip Barbour on Tuesday night.
Tucker County (12-3) hosts Notre Dame on the same evening.

DUNMORE — Pocahontas County picked up a 36-27 win over Richwood on Wednesday.
Junior Macaden Taylor led the Lady Warriors with 11 points, six rebounds and six steals.
Senior Sienna Bircher finished with 10 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks.
High scorers for the Lady ‘Jacks was Trinity Amick with 12 points and 14 rebounds and junior Kiara Smith with nine points and eight rebounds.
Pocahontas County (4-5) was slated to visit James Monroe on Friday night.
Richwood is slated to visit Tygarts Valley at 1:30 p.m. today.
