CHARLESTON — Tucker County’s season came to an end on Thursday night in a 49-31 setback to top-seed Tug Valley in Class A semifinal action at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The Lady Panthers (14-2) took the lead for good on Kaylea Baisden’s 3-pointer with 5:35 left in the opening quarter that broke an early 2-2 deadlock.

Baisden finished with a game-high 17 points for Tug Valley, which will face second-seed Cameron at 10 a.m. Saturday in the title game.

Tug Valley went on to lead 11-5 entering the second canto before Brylee Wetzel’s trey brought Tucker County within 13-10 midway through the second quarter.

But the fourth-seeded Lady Mountain Lions came no closer as the Lady Panthers built a 23-12 halftime edge.

Tucker County remained in striking distance throughout the third quarter, however, and another 3-pointer by Wetzel with 1:42 left in the canto cut the Tug Valley lead to 30-23.

Six straight points by Makayla May and a 3-pointer from Alyssa Newsome just before the horn sounded then allowed the Lady Panthers to open up a commanding 39-23 cushion entering the final quarter.

The lead didn’t get under 15 points over the final 8 minutes.

May added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Newsome 10 points for the Lady Panthers.

Tucker County, which was plagued by 27 turnovers, was led by freshman Macy Helmick with nine points and four assists. Wetzel added eight points.

Kadie Colebank, who entered the game averaging 17.7 points, was limited to just two points, hitting her lone field-goal attempt. She did have nine caroms.

The Lady Mountain Lions, who lose just one senior in Gracie Rapp, finished the season 17-5.
