Lincoln bests Lady Colts in pitcher’s duel
PHILIPPI — Two of the top pitchers in the Big 10 Conference were on display on Saturday afternoon as Lincoln blanked Philip Barbour, 2-0.
In a pitcher’s duel between the Lady Cougars’ Delaney Haller and the Lady Colts’ Sara Simon, the visitors plated one run in each of the fifth and six innings.
Destiny Cunningham and Alexis Williams had solo homers for Lincoln to account for the game’s lone runs.
Philip Barbour’s best scoring chance came in the fifth when Katie Kennedy led off with a double.
But Haller struck out the next three batters to halt the threat.
Hailee Poling started the seventh with a single for the Lady Colts but was retired on a fielder’s choice and Haller got a strike out and pop out to end the game.
Haller, a sophomore, fanned 12, allowed four hits and didn’t walk a batter. She is now 10-0 on the season.
Simon, meanwhile, matched her counterpart with 12 strikeouts of her own, giving up six hits and also not issuing a free pass.
Lilley Criss had two hits to lead the hosts.
Williams had two safeties in the win.
The Lady Colts had their seven-game winning streak snapped and are now 7-2 overall and 7-2 in the Big 10. They are slated to visit Lewis County at 5 p.m. today.
Lincoln improved to 10-0 and 10-0 in the Big 10.
