Simon twirls two-hitter, fans 15 as Lady Colts blank Elkins

PHILIPPI — Sara Simon twirled a two-hitter and struck out 15 to lead Philip Barbour to a 2-0 win over Elkins Thursday in Big 10 Conference action.

Simon and Lady Tiger starter Kylee Cable were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the Lady Colts finally dented the scoreboard with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, McKenzie Moss drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and raced home on Katielynn Warner’s single to left.

Philip Barbour tacked on an insurance run an inning later when Lilley Criss reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on an error. She then scored on Katie Kennedy’s sacrifice bunt.

Hailee Poling had two hits to lead the Lady Colts at the plate.

Cable went all six innings in taking the loss, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out two and walking two.

Sydney Wamsley and Kennedy Hart accounted for Elkins’ two hits.

Philip Barbour has won seven straight games to improve to 7-1 overall and 7-1 in Big 10 play. The Lady Colts are scheduled to host Lincoln at 2 p.m. Saturday in a Big 10 showdown.

Elkins dropped to 1-7 and 1-7 in Big 10 play and will travel to Buckhannon-Upshur on Saturday to face Preston and the Lady Bucs.
