B-U hopes to make noise in Class AAA meet

CHARLESTON — Buckhannon-Upshur’s Shawn Blandino, Sterlin Thropp and Dezi Pugh will compete in the 400-meter dash this evening on the eve of the full Class AAA portion of the state track and field meet at University of Charleston at Laidley Field.

The Class A meet was held on Wednesday and the double-A event is taking place today.

Saturday’s triple-A meet will include four relay teams for the B-U girls, along with three individual competititors.

The 4×200 relay unit competing includes Pugh, Kierra Arbogast, Catherine Oliveto and Chloe Cale, while Miah Reger, Cameron Zuliani, Oliveto and Pugh are entered in the 4×400 and Jessica Williams, Ashley Catlin, Reger and Allison Andrew in the 4×800.

The shuttle hurdle relay consists of Arbogast, Zuliani, Pugh and Cale.

Zuliani is among one of the favorites in the discus, turning in a throw of 111-11 to capture the regional title.

Cale is also a contender in the long jump as her second-place effort of 16-03.50 in the regional meet is third best among the field.

Catherine Neely will join Zuliani in the discus event.

Along with Blandino and Thropp in the 400, the B-U boys will be represented by all five relays.

The 4×100 unit includes Zach Barcus, Blandino, Cam Snyder and Thropp, while the 4×200 is comprised of Blandino, Dakota Smith, Thropp and Donovan Abel.

The 4×400 group competing includes Jordan Gillum, Milo Baumann, Blandino and Thropp. Gillum, Baumann, Julian Larcher and Julius Hobbs make up the 4×800.

The shuttle hurdle group includes Barcus, Hobbs, Damien Claypool and Smith.

Hobbs is also entered in the pole vault.
