Weather halts Region II contest

Herbert Hoover leads Colts, 9-6, in sixth inning of series opener

PHILIPPI — The first game of the Class AA Region II best-of-three championship series between Herbert Hoover and Philip Barbour was suspended due to the weather on Monday night.

The contest will resume at 6 p.m. today in Philippi. Game 2 is now set for Wednesday at Herbert Hoover.

The Huskies had a 9-6 lead and were batting in the top of the sixth inning when the game was halted. They plated one run in the frame on a single by Will Bright, and runners remained on first and second with no outs.

The Colts trailed 7-1 and 8-4 before pushing two runs across in the fifth.

Bright leads Herbert Hoover at the plate, cracking a bases-clearing double in the fourth, an RBI double in the third and his run-producing single in the sixth to give him five RBIs.

Jesiah Matlick hit a a two-run homer for the Colts in the opening game of the Class AA Region II championship series, which was halted in the sixth inning on Monday night due to the weather.

Nick Graham added a solo homer in the fifth.

Jesiah Matlick, who has three hits in the game, smacked a two-run homer in the fifth for the Colts, while Nick Hamrick, Cody Cooper and Alex Wilson had RBI singles in the fourth.

Cooper has went the distance for Philip Barbour.

Ryan Beasley started and went 4 2/3 innings for the Huskies before giving way to Matthew Toops.

The winner of the series advances to the state tournament set for June 24-26 at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
