Post 29 bests Buckhannon

Elkins takes first game of best-of-three Area 5 tourney series

ELKINS — Elkins Post 29 erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning en route to a 12-1 win in five innings over Buckhannon Tuesday night in Area 5 tourney play at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

The best-of-three series now moves to William E. Phillips Memorial Field in Tennerton at 7:30 p.m. today, with Post 7 needing a victory to force a deciding game Thursday in Elkins.

Elkins took advantage of a pair of Buckhannon errors to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Post 7 tied the game in the second when Clint Crites reached on a hit-bats-man and later scored on Cam Tenney’s double.

But in the home-half of the frame, Post 29 sent 10 batters to the plate to take control.

Gage Bibey, who had led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch, had a bases-clearing triple to deep center to lead the uprising.

Nick Hamrick, Alex Wilson and Cory Reed added RBI singles in the frame.

Hamrick’s RBI sacrifice fly in the third scored Dustyn Primavero to make it 9-1, and Post 29 tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 12-1.

Reliever Matthew Pratt worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth to end the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Will Knight started and earned the win for Elkins, going four innings and allowing just one run.

Issac Lane took the loss for Buckhannon in 1 1/3 innings of work.
