Bucs hold off late PB rally

Johnston’s 100-yard interception return as time expires secures win

PHILIPPI — Bryson Johnston’s interception return for a score as time expired preserved Buckhannon-Upshur’s 27-16 win over Philip Barbour Friday night at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

Trailing 21-16, the Colts had possession in Buccaneer territory before Johnston picked off a pass in the end zone and raced 100 yards as time expired.

B-U took a 14-10 lead into the intermission on a 4-yard run by quarterback Ian Donnen and a 71-yard burst from Savion Farmer, with Cameron Zuliani tacking on both conversion kicks.

A field goal by Grant Dadisman and TD run by Jesiah Matlick accounted for the Colts’ first-half points.

A touchdown run by Farmer increased the the Bucs’ lead to 21-10 in the second half but Philip Barbour answered on a scoring burst by DeShawn Webster to set up the exciting conclusion.

It was a matchup of two first-year coaches in B-U’s Zach Davis and the Colts’ Nick Mayle.

The Bucs improved to 1-1 and will remain on the road next Friday at Greenbrier East.

The Colts will venture to Liberty on the same evening.
