East Fairmont halts Lady Tigers’ win streak at 11 games
PHILIPPI — East Fairmont halted Elkins’ 11-game win streak in a 2-1 victory Thursday night in Big 10 Conference girls soccer action at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.
The Lady Tigers entered the match sixth in this week’s West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association Class AA-A rankings. They had been undefeated since dropping a 1-0 decision to top-ranked Winfield back on Aug. 21.
In an evenly played contest, the Lady Bees, ranked eighth, took a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by Madison Lott.
Elkins got even in the second half when senior Anna Belan converted on a penalty kick.
But East Fairmont (9-0-1, 6-0-1 Big 10) later picked up an own goal off a corner to garner the win.
“The girls played hard tonight, but we faced a very good and physical East Fairmont team,” Lady Tigers coach Scott Cutright said. “We created a more opportunities in the second half, but fell just short.
“We need to put this behind us and bounce back for our sectional game against Lewis County next week.”
Elkins (11-2-0, 8-1-0) will visit the Minutemaids at 6 p.m. Tuesday and remain on the road Thursday to battle Bridgeport in a pair of Big 10 contests.
