Elkins’ Smoak captures fifth race of season

GRAFTON — Charlie Smoak captured his fifth victory of the season and Elkins placed third as a team at the Bearcat Invitational held Saturday at West Taylor Elementary School.

Smoak, who cleared the course in a time of 16:23, has finished in the top five in all eight meets for the Tigers, who also had Lucas Anger turn in a fifth-place showng in a time of 17:21.00.

Other EHS finishers included Isaac Anger in 26th (18:53), Tyler Burda 30th (19:28), Tyler McKisic 38th (19:57), Brandon Rossi 40th (20:20), Gavin Brown 47th (20:57), Noah Von Leben 61st (22:02) and Andres Masten 63rd (22:17).

East Fairmont won the meet with a score of 48, followed by Fairmont Senior (54), Elkins (79), Oak Glen (131), Notre Dame (148), North Marion (161), Berkeley Springs (171), Grafton (173), Tucker County (225) and Robert C. Byrd (239).

Philip Barbour fielded an incomplete team and was led by Jacob Davies in 22nd place (18:38).

Devin Whitmore placed 45th (20:44) to pace Tucker County.

The EHS girls placed fifth and were led by Samantha Sproul, who cleared the course in a time of 21:22 to finish in11th.

She was followed by teammates Mallory Bennett (26th, 22:26), Katelyn Collins (33rd, 23:00), Kiley Edwards (43rd, 24:13) and Holly Harper (53rd, 25:00).

Doddridge County, led by Alexis Lamb’s first-place finish in a time of 18:37, had a score of 46 to take team honors.

North Marion (110) was second, followed by East Fairmont (111), Fairmont Senior (116), Elkins (129), Liberty (136), Grafton (161), Tucker County (170), Tyler Consolidated (207), Berkeley Springs (221) and Lincoln (270).

Phaedra Payne was 14th in a time of 21:40 for the Lady Colts, who fielded an incomplete team, while Erin Chambers (12th, 21:27) and Katie Hicks (13th, 21:34) were Tucker County’s top finishers.

Elkins will return to action Saturday at the Fairmont Senior Invitational to be held over the Apple Valley Golf Course.
