Big 10 meet slated for Thursday morning
Talented field set to compete at Philip Barbour
PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour will play host to the Big 10 Conference Cross Country Championships on Thursday morning.
The girls race is set for 10 a.m., followed by the boys at approximately 11 a.m.
There will be an entry fee of $6 for spectators and concessions will be available.
Both races feature some of the top teams in the state, as seven squads are among the top 10 in the girls’ Class AAA and AA runwv.com power rankings and three in the double-A boys.
North Marion, 2020 Big 10 champion Preston, Fairmont Senior and East Fairmont are the favorites in the girls race. The Lady Polar Bears are the defending Class AA state champions.
Fairmont Senior’s Lydia Falkenstein, the 2020 state and league champion, is expected to be challenged by Preston’s Allie Martin, Liberty’s Aliya Todd, North Marion’s Taylor Hess and B-U freshman Samantha Shreve for top individual honors.
Elkins is led by junior Samantha Sproul, and junior Megan Mitchell paces the host Lady Colts.
EHS senior Charlie Smoak is the favorite to capture the boys title, along with East Fairmont’s Drew Moore, Smoak’s teammate and fellow senor Lucas Anger and Fairmont Senior’s Jasper Brown.
Junior Jordan Gillum and junior Jacob Davies lead B-U and Philip Barbour, respectively.
East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior and Elkins are the top contenders for the team banner.
Regional action is set for next week, with Elkins hosting the Class AA, Region II Championships on Oct. 21 over the Davis & Elkins College course.
The state meet will be held Oct. 30 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
