Tygarts Valley places two on all-state first team

Gibson and Tackett receive honors on Class A grid squad

WHEELING — Tygarts Valley’s Garrett Gibson and Riley Tackett made the first team of the Class A all-state football squad announced today by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Gibson, among the state leaders in interception, was selected as one of the utility players on defense, and Tackett was tabbed the first-team punter.

Gibson finished with 122 tackles and nine interceptions. Tackett, meanwhile, pinned 11 punts inside the 20.

Pocahontas County junior offensive lineman Austin Morgan was named to the second team, while Tucker County senior J.J. Knotts was listed as honorable mention.

East Hardy junior receiver Dawson Price also earned a spot on the first unit. Price garnered 56 receptions for 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

Gus Morrison, of state champion Ritchie County, was named captain of the first team as one of the utility players.

Joining Morrison on the first team are his teammates junior Ethan Haught (quarterback) and senior Conner Shaffer (offensive lineman).

Williamstown also punched its ticket to the state title game with three all-state first teamers leading the way.

Sophomore quarterback Maxwell Molessa earned a spot as a utility man for his ability to throw and run. He is joined by junior linebacker Rickie Allen and senior offensive lineman Colton Melrose.
